Maybe that is the difference between a minion and a master? - The intelligence and persistence to hone their senses (as Giles told Buffy to do, in the Bronze in Welcome to the Hellmouth). This is a great analogy!

I think you're right... it took him a while, but then he did start to include some of those elements. I think I just always felt that some things should never have been able to occur (i.e., Xander could have occasionally landed a lucky punch - once a season maybe - but not with the regularity he did, even hanging out with the Slayer). Toward the end though, okay. Yeah, Whedon did better. I just think you do better still with that.
