I'm always left awed by your ability to portray a fight scene. I'm left no less so by Xander's excruiating attempt to purchase his freedom. The phone call to Giles was dearly bought with his own logic of what it would cost him to try a second time if he could even manage it, and I just winced so many times his internal narrative of the pain and the nausea and all that went along with it. Beautifully done, love.
Motel/hotel clerks... aren't they fun? You've given us a real treat with this one, and although he's much different from the last I needed to portray, there's still the resemblance in that it's so much fun to have a passing character you need to describe in detail but whose details won't come back to haunt you later. I really enjoyed meeting your Mr. Not So Niceguy here, and he was just the perfect complement to Xander's internal battle to get in the damned door in the first place.
It seems somehow in keeping with this entire chapter that the only dialog Xander would have with anyone would be the clerk and the telephone operator. What a crushing blow for the boy. And what a tasty (if somewhat minor) victory for Spike. His test worked. Things are moving along nicely. Last week was a lovely setup, and this week just reinforced Spike's plans.
Very, very much looking forward to what you make of it all next week.
