I'm enjoying the sine wave of experience Xander is having. This time we start with him having a seemingly casual conversation with Jimmy. Jimmy makes a move and Xander almost casually points a gun at him and he backs off. I could just see that scene it was so wonderfully painted in a few words.
Then we plunge down to Xander treating Jimmy too much like a friend and finding out Jimmy doesn't return the sentiments. I like that, despite his intense desire to see his sire respected, he doesn't respect him enough to obey him.
Enter Spike and the line rises and dips. Xander doesn't fear Spike but he wonders what he's promised Jimmy.
Then we have a sharp rise when Xander sees how gravely Jimmy is injured, followed by a sharp plunge when Spike kills him. Spike's regret over having to do so was well done. Probably a better epitaph than most vampires get.
